DOUBLE BARELL MALAYALAM FULL MOVIE 2015

Language: Malayalam
Genre: Action, Comedy, Thriller
Year: 2015
Director: Lijo Jose Pellissery

REVIEW

Lijo Jose’s Double Barrel makes no claims to be realistic; the beginning credits specify that Russians, Utopians etc will speak Malayalam in this film. And they do too, including a gang of blacks, who have names like Suresh and speak like Mollywood comedians. However, the movie goes a few steps ahead and starts resembling a disconnected series of hallucinations and dream sequences randomly put together.

It is quite obvious that the filmmaker has been heavily influenced by western flicks, but the result is something like a Mexican underworld gangster movie starring Malayalam actors or a Hollywood film dubbed into Malayalam.

Most of Double Barrel is set in Goa, and the story per se is irrelevant, as it gets submerged in a deluge of characters, each more flamboyant than the other. They smoke, walk in slow motion, talk like gangsters and laugh hysterically at their own jokes.

As the tagline suggests, there is no mortal combat, only guns, and all through, they shoot each other in a manner never before seen in a Malayalam movie. The story revolves around a set of two precious stones, each worthless without the other. What ensues is a battle to obtain their possession by different gangs, among who are Russians as well as a local gang from Thrissur.

Characters played by Indrajith and Prithviraj have comparatively more screen time than others, and while the former manages to carry off clownish antics, a sniggering Prithviraj definitely looks odd.

Arya, dressed in a bright pink duke costume for no particular reason, Swati Reddy, Chemban Vinod, Vijay Babu and Sunny Wayne are some of the other actors whom you manage to keep track of among the crowd.

Other than the visual spectacle of seeing some major actors in the industry in their clownish avatars in the most impressive of settings, there is nothing much to engage the viewer. The shooting and killing seem never-ending and the jokes tedious. Catchy songs composed by Prashant Pillai seem out of this world and come across as a relief. Flawless cinematography and visual effects are on a par with that of any Hollywood flick.

As the filmmaker himself has admitted, the film is an experiment in Malayalam – a gangster comedy. But, it fails to entertain and leaves the average Malayali viewer dumbstruck, wondering what they had just witnessed.
